What was the Oakwood building before Cook Out?

A longtime bank. The Gainesville Times described the original conversion as a 5,000-square-foot building with a white clapboard exterior and a brick chimney, and said the Oakwood restaurant would also run a regional payroll operation. The city manager said the building was renovated down to its shell.

The restaurant opened with about 35 employees, 10 of them in that payroll operation.

How much has Cook Out grown in Georgia since Oakwood opened?

More than doubled. When the Mundy Mill Road store opened in 2015 it was the 20th restaurant in Georgia. Georgia now has about 46, the third-largest state count after North Carolina and South Carolina, so Oakwood's store has gone from a newcomer to one of the older locations in the state.

What do Oakwood diners say?

The Tripadvisor reviews are mixed. Titles run from "Good tasting hamburgers" to "ripped off", and the themes are consistent: slow service and order mistakes on one side, and cheap, filling meals and friendly staff on the other. Value earns the highest score, 4 of 5, against 3.5 for food and service. Those reviews pre-date the remodel, so they describe the old kitchen.

What is new around the Oakwood Cook Out?

A Kroger Marketplace. The store at 4085 Mundy Mill Road, a $49.2 million investment of more than 123,000 square feet and 300 jobs, opened on August 21, 2026, a month after Cook Out reopened. The shopping center around it has four outparcels of 1.12 to 1.44 acres for restaurants and other uses, so the corridor is filling in.

What does a tray cost in Hall County?

Hall County's combined sales tax is 7%, a 4% state rate plus 3% county, according to Avalara and Salestaxhandbook, a half point under Florida's. Typical chain-wide prices, not a posted Oakwood price, put a Regular Tray at $7.91 with tax, a Jr. Tray at $6.84 and a milkshake at $4.27.

Is the reopened Oakwood Cook Out worth a stop?

Yes, if you are on I-985 and want a late tray. The kitchen is newly remodeled and the reviews on file describe the old one. Check the hours before a late run, since the store has not published them.
