What is on a Cookout Style burger?

Four toppings: homemade chili, slaw, mustard and onion. The Tasting Table called the combination award-winning in 2017 without naming an award, and described a patty that tastes like it came off a backyard grill. Cook Out chargrills its burgers and wraps them in foil, a detail the same piece credits for keeping the heat in.

How much of the burger is topping?

The style adds weight and sodium more than it adds calories. At 518 mg of sodium, the add-on carries more salt than the 340 mg in a regular patty, which puts the finished burger at 858 mg.

How did Daily Meal rate each topping?

Writer Shelby Bock ranked the Cook Out Style Hamburger fifth of nine fast food signature burgers in May 2025, behind Checkers, Burger King, Culver's and McDonald's and ahead of Wendy's, Dairy Queen, Sonic and Arby's. The patty was thick and well cooked, and the bun was a soft white bun toasted slightly. The toppings split the verdict.

ChiliLiked; slightly sweet from the tomato base
SlawThe disappointment; "cabbage tossed in plain mayonnaise"
OnionFine, but too much
MustardFine, but too much

The reviewer still said the burger offered unique flavors and good value, and would order it again. Only Dairy Queen's Stackburger cost less in the ranking, at $5.13 against Cook Out's $5.33, while the top three cost $6.62 to $7.27.

What do people order it on?

The Big Double, most often. A Sun Herald reviewer in Gulfport ordered it Cookout Style on a Big Double tray with Cajun fries, onion rings, a Cajun ranch wrap, a chili hot dog and a strawberry shake for about $17, and called the charcoal patties the star of the show. The Big Double guide breaks down that burger's 311 calories.

How has the price moved?

The tray that cost $5 in the Tasting Table's 2017 piece costs a typical $7.39 now, a 48% rise in nine years. The burger alone is $3.99 in Cook Out Style. Prices are typical chain-wide figures, not posted store prices, and the price guide has the full board.

Who should order the Cookout Style burger?

Anyone ordering a Cook Out burger for the first time, and anyone who wants chili on a burger. Skip the slaw if cabbage in mayonnaise is not your idea of a topping, and ask for light onion and mustard if Daily Meal's complaint sounds familiar.
